Prebys Foundation is pleased to announce that Lori Gillam has joined the organization as Controller.
Lori brings more than 30 years of experience in accounting and finance, with a career deeply rooted in service to nonprofit organizations. She began her professional journey in public accounting, where she spent 10 years auditing and supporting small nonprofits across San Diego, Oceanside, and Los Angeles. That experience sparked a lasting commitment to community-driven organizations and the people who make them thrive.
Most recently, Lori served as Senior Director of Accounting and Controller at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, where she spent nearly 11 years leading finance operations. There she met Conrad Prebys when he made a significant philanthropic gift, an encounter that left a lasting impression.
“It’s inspiring to see people invest in their communities the way Conrad did,” Lori shared. “I may never be in a position to give at that level, but I can give back in other ways — through my work and my small slice of making a difference.”
Prebys Director of Finance & Accounting , Matt Bertsch, is excited to have her on the finance and operations team. “We’re thrilled to welcome Lori Gillam as our Controller,” says Matt. “Her extensive nonprofit accounting experience and deep roots in San Diego align beautifully with our mission.”
A third-generation San Diegan, Lori grew up in North Park, where her family has lived for generations. She has a lifelong love of Balboa Park, where she took art classes as a child.
When she’s not balancing ledgers, Lori enjoys new creative pursuits, and swimming with her longtime friend (a spirited 89-year-old who keeps her on her toes). She also hopes to add a new language to her repertoire soon.
