What does it mean when we say we stand with someone?

For us at Prebys, it means we support them even — especially — when they are under attack. It means we will not abandon them because powerful interests have aligned against them. It means we share their vision for a better world. It means we see what they see no matter how many times we are collectively told not to see it or to speak of it. It means our voice will amplify their voice. It means we will dig deeper than we otherwise might. It means our love is not conditioned upon the whim and the approval of the high and the mighty but is rooted in the principled and the just.

In all these ways, we want to say this to our nonprofit and community partners and to our foundation colleagues from all around California and the country who are showing up with solidarity, courage, voice, vision, and resources:

We stand with you.

You are working to protect due process, free expression, the right to protest, the right to report, and a country free of political violence. You are acting to protect our immigrant and refugee neighbors, families, and friends. You are leading nonprofits and foundations in the best and bravest tradition of America’s precious civil society. You are striving to build community and strengthen the fabric of belonging here in San Diego and everywhere else. You are bravely aware that to counter injustice, we must name it. You are using your creative voices and power to build understanding and give rise to a better future for all of us. You are defending science and the greatness of American research. You are fighting to protect the health of every child and every adult living in our communities.

In short, you are modeling the real promise of America by working every day to fulfill it.

We are inspired by your courage. And we are proud to be by your side.”
