“The federal government’s targeting of charitable foundations like the Open Society Foundations appears to be nothing more than an assault on free speech and the freedom to give.
When power is abused to silence civil society, it puts the rights of all Americans at risk. Foundations and nonprofits must be free to support the causes that strengthen our communities and our democracy. Attempts to distort, discredit, or criminalize this work simply because of disagreements over opinions and beliefs weaken the very civic fabric that allows us to come together across differences.
We stand with those under attack and affirm our commitment to defend the freedoms that make philanthropy not just possible, but essential in our pluralistic and democratic society.”
